Project M: June in Alabama

Posted by: snarklydeux on: August 11, 2009

On the heels of graduating from Grad Com D, I was lucky enough to spend the month of June as part of an intensive design collective called Project M. Project M was founded by designer John Bielenberg, who shares his time between Maine and San Francisco, and the many “M’s” in between. We had many inspiring advisors and guests at our M, including William Drenttel, James Victore, and Eric Heiman, among others.

Inspired Samuel Mockbee who created Auburn University’s Rural Studio, John wanted to create that same spirit of design-for-social-good for budding creatives, particularly graphic designers. Upon asked what Project M meant to him during our M in Hale County, Alabama, John responded that M is meant to act as an incubator, creating and inspiring agents of change in our challenging world. Our group of 10 came from California, Texas, New York, Virginia, Tennessee, and Canada: 9 communication designers and one interior designer, ranging in age from 21-32.

What better a place to contemplate change and the power of design in a place seemingly lost in another era. Greensboro, Alabama, M’s headquarters for this M, is a place filled with a strained, decaying beauty firmly rooted in the past, from deteriorated antebellum homes to segregated schools and restaurants. For this New Englander at heart, it was hard to imagine a place in which lines were so drawn, transparency not being the problem. To read the whole story, please visit my blog.

Survey Feedback

Posted by: ccweblog on: May 13, 2009

GradComD Survey 2009 is over! I am now seeking your feedback. Please let me know your thoughts on how survey went (this would include the Thesis presentations and reviews that occurred the weeks prior).

Please consider the following questions: Was Survey an improvement this year over years prior? If so, in what way? Was there anything about Survey this year that didn’t work and could be improved upon? Do you have any specific suggestions to improve or change Survey for next year?
